Not sure what to ask? Use our checklist to ensure you chose the right contractor.

CHECKPOINT 1

Did the contractor ask about your budget?

As you may already know, remodeling in Long Island is expensive. Have you done a thorough examination of your budget? Have you taken into account project overages and add-on pricing? Most importantly, did your contractor ask you how much you have to spend and reconcile it with your project needs? If not, you WILL get hit with overages.

CHECKPOINT 2

Did the labor proposal clearly itemize the services provided?

This is very important and all too often we see estimates created that don’t include critical line items such as electrical and plumbing. These items could be left off of an estimate in order to get you to commit and be brought up only after it’s too late to turn back. Look out for permitting costs, electrical materials and installation and plumbing costs.

CHECKPOINT 3

Did the contractor provide proof of insurance?

Kitchens and bathrooms are areas with a high level of liability that could be the homeowners responsibility. Plumbing can cause flooding and gas and electrical work can cause fires. Make sure that your contractor is adequately insured for the work they do, who they have doing the work and any damage that may occur as a result of the project.

CHECKPOINT 4

Did the contractor give you a price range for tile, cabinets and plumbing fixtures?

Generally speaking, labor and product are two separate estimates. For example, you may receive an estimate from a contractor that covers the demolition and installation of a new kitchen or bathroom and another estimate for the product used to finish the projects. Be sure that your contractor is up front with you about the cost of cabinets, tile, countertops, faucets, sinks, etc. This number will likely be as much or more than your labor estimate.

CHECKPOINT 5

Do you have a clear understanding of the process and who will be responsible for what?

Be sure to ask your contractor who will be responsible for certain parts of your project. Who is going to be responsible for designing your kitchen or bathroom or choosing, ordering and delivery of your product? These are respects of the process that we find often get left to the homeowner and leave them feeling overwhelmed and unsupported by the contractor. Ask questions now so that you feel confident when it comes time to build.

Still have questions? That’s ok. We have answers.
